South Carolina real estate broker reminds home buyers of eavesdropping technology

If you are shopping for a new house, a real estate broker from Greenville, South Carolina said there’s one thing she constantly has to tell buyers not to do. “I have to do my best to remind clients, especially on their way out of a home, ‘Hey, don’t talk about how much you liked it. Zip it. Poker face,'” said Angela Rodriguez, Broker-In-Charge with Parker Group. Rodriguez said it’s important to remember that many homes now have video doorbell cameras that record everything. She said they allow sellers to hear everything people say as they are entering and leaving a house. She said that could be very harmful to buyers if they say too much. “You’re giving away your power by letting them know how much you want something. That’s the art of any negotiation. Who wants it more? That’s who pays more,” Rodriguez said.”From the seller’s perspective, they’re trying to go on about their day, but all of a sudden, their phone alerts them that someone is at their front door, talking about their home. Of course, they’re curious and would want to know what people are saying about their most prized possession,” Rodriguez said. “A seller knows exactly what time a showing request is made, and then you’ve got the video evidence with the doorbell camera so they can match up the showing. And you know the agent’s name that brought them, and you would see the agent’s name that turns in the offer. You really can’t escape that reality TV doorbell camera. But it’s one thing if you don’t know where the other side is,” Rodriguez said. Rodriguez said every May and June are the busiest months in real estate because families typically don’t want to move during the school year. But she said in the Upstate, it’s been busy year-round for the last two years because there are more buyers than sellers.
