Rock the Block application period for home improvement in Oak Park opens up
WHEREVER YOU ARE. THANKS, MIKE. AND IF YOU’RE A SACRAMENTO HOMEOWNER AND LIVE IN THE OAK PARK AREA, NOW’S YOUR CHANCE TO GET SOME HELP WITH SOME MUCH NEEDED HOME PROJECTS. HABITAT FOR HUMANITY IS ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS RIGHT NOW FOR THIS YEAR’S ROCK THE BLOCK. AND JOINING ME THIS MORNING IS LEAH MILLER, PRESIDENT OF HABITAT FOR HUMANITY. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR JOINING US. THIS IS AN EXCITING OPPORTUNITY. WHAT DO YOU WANT TO LET THE COMMUNITY KNOW ABOUT ROCK THE BLOCK? I WANT TO LET EVERYONE KNOW THAT THE TIME IS NOW TO APPLY FOR THE OPPORTUNITY TO BENEFIT FROM LOW AND NO COST HOME REPAIRS FOR THOSE RESIDENTS THAT ARE HOMEOWNERS LIVING IN THE OAK PARK NEIGHBORHOOD, WHICH IS PART OF OUR SEVENTH ANNUAL ROCK THE BLOCK INITIATIVE, TAKING PART IN OAK PARK THIS SUMMER. THAT IS TERRIFIC. TELL ME WHAT HOMEOWNERS CAN TAKE ADVANTAGE OF IF THEY DO CONTACT YOU AND QUALIFY. YEAH. AFTER APPLYING, WE WILL BE ABLE TO GO OUT AND DO A SCOPE ON YOUR HOME FOR THE TYPES OF REPAIRS WE’RE LOOKING FOR. THOSE THAT ARE HEALTH AND SAFETY CRITICAL HOME REPAIRS, UM, ROOF REPLACEMENT, ROOF REPAIRS, DRY ROT, DROUGHT TOLERANT LANDSCAPING, PAINTING OF YOUR EXTERIOR OF YOUR HOME, FENCES, A LOT OF HEALTH AND SAFETY ISSUES THAT MIGHT NEED BE MIGHT NEED TO BE ADDRESSED. AND IT’S PART OF OUR INITIATIVE WHERE IN MAY, ON MAY 4TH AND FIFTH, HUNDREDS OF VOLUNTEERS, OVER 500 VOLUNTEERS COME OUT OVER A PERIOD OF 36 HOURS AND REPAIR BETWEEN 20 AND 25 HOMES AND COMPLETE ABOUT FIVE COMMUNITY PROJECTS AND IT’S ALL MADE POSSIBLE BY A VARIETY OF INVESTORS. BUT OUR PRESENTING SPONSOR THIS YEAR IS THE CITY OF SACRAMENTO. HOW DO YOU THINK THIS IS CHANGING LIVES FROM WHAT YOU’VE SEEN? YOU KNOW, I THINK IT’S BEEN CHANGING LIVES IN A LOT OF REALLY IMPORTANT WAYS BECAUSE AS WE ALL KNOW, WE’RE IN THE MIDST OF AN AFFORDABLE HOUSING CRISIS AND WE NEED NEW HOMES, NEW UNITS, BUT WE ALSO NEED TO PRESERVE THE EXISTING AFFORDABLE UNITS THAT’S IN OUR COMMUNITY. AND THAT’S WHAT ROCK THE BLOCK IS ABOUT, HELPING SENIORS, FAMILIES, VETERANS STAY IN THEIR ALREADY AFFORDABLE HOMES BY ADDRESSING THOSE DEFERRED MAINTENANCE ISSUES, THINGS THAT NEED TO BE TAKEN CARE OF TO HELP THEM STAY IN THEIR ALREADY AFFORDABLE HOMES AND PRESERVE THE EXISTING AFFORDABLE HOUSING IN OUR COMMUNITY, AND PREDOMINANTLY IN THAT OAK PARK NEIGHBORHOOD THAT WE’RE FOCUSING ON WITH ROCK. ABSOLUTELY. GIVE ME AN EXAMPLE OF SOMEONE WHO WOULD QUALIFY FOR SOMETHING LIKE THIS, WHO WOULD BE A GOOD CANDIDATE. FOLKS THAT WOULD QUALIFY ARE THOSE THAT ARE HOMEOWNERS CURRENTLY LIVING IN THE OAK PARK COMMUNITY WHO ARE LIVING ON A FIXED INCOME, OR WHO MAY BE LOW INCOME, WHO NEED HELP WITH WITH HOME REPAIRS. AND THEY SHOULD DEFINITELY GO TO OUR WEBSITE, HABITAT GREATER SAC.ORG/ROCK THE BLOCK TO DOWNLOAD THE APPLICATION, LOOK AT THE MAP AND LEARN MORE. IS THIS COMPLETELY FREE TO THEM OR DO THEY HAVE TO PAY A CERTAIN PERCENTAGE OF THE REPAIRS BEING DONE IN THEIR HOME? GREAT QUESTION. YES, AFTER APPLYING AND GETTING ACCEPTED, REPAIRS ARE DONE. THERE ARE SOME SOME OF THE REPAIRS THAT WE DO THAT ARE NO COST, BUT THEY’RE ALSO LOW COST DEPENDING UPON INCOME AS WELL AS THE THE TOTAL COST OF REPAIRS BEING DONE TO THE HOME. AND SOMETIMES APPLICATIONS CAN BE SCARY FOR SOME PEOPLE. IS THIS A SHORT ONE? HOW LONG IS THE PROCESS TO TO FINALLY BE? WELL, THE APPLICATION ISN’T ALL THAT TOUGH. THE DEADLINE IS THIS THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 1ST. UM, DOWNLOAD THE APPLICATION. THINGS THAT ARE REALLY NEEDED IS PROOF OF HOMEOWNERSHIP. SO YOUR MORTGAGE STATEMENTS, PROOF OF HOMEOWNER’S INSURANCE, YOUR INCOME TAXES, AND FILLING OUT THE SHORT APPLICATION, LETTING US KNOW EXACTLY WHAT YOU NEED AND TURNING IT IN BEFORE THURSDAY. AND WHAT YOU NEED IS ALSO VOLUNTEERS. A QUICK SHOUT OUT FOR THEM. YES, ALWAYS NEED VOLUNTEERS. AND WHILE THE CITY OF SACRAMENTO IS OUR PRESENTING SPONSOR, WE’RE ALSO LOOKING FOR OTHER SUPPORTERS AS WELL. AGAIN, GO TO HABITAT GREATER SAC.ORG FORWARD SLASH, ROCK THE BLOCK TO LEARN MORE ABOUT BECOMING A VOLUNTEER OR HELPING TO BECOME AN INVESTOR FOR THIS INCREDIBLE INITIATIVE, WHICH BRINGS TOGETHER HUNDREDS OF VOLUNTEERS TO MAKE A GREAT PROJECT. LEAH MILLE
