Pros and Cons of Renting a Furnished Apartment

Moving into a new place can be a stressful time. Between finding a rental, packing up your belongings, and moving in, it can be easy to want to minimize the amount of work you have to do.

One thing many people do to make a move a bit easier is to rent furnished apartments, which removes the stress of having to furnish your apartment yourself.

Pros

Easier to Move

The main benefit to renting an apartment that is already furnished is that you don’t have to move your own furniture. Once you move in, you won’t have to sit through hours of furniture assembly. Instead, all you’ll have to do is unpack.

Great for Short Term

If you move around multiple times a year or are only looking for something temporary, a furnished apartment would be perfect. This saves you the frustration of selling or the cost of storing your furniture once you move out.

Lower Up-Front Cost

Although the rent on a furnished apartment may be a bit more than an unfurnished apartment, you won’t have to put out money for an entire apartment’s worth of furniture when you move in. Not only can buying all of that furniture get pricey, but it’s also a lot of work.

Cons

Higher Rent

The rent on furnished apartments is usually higher than unfurnished apartments. If you only plan to rent short-term and have no need for your own furniture, then a slightly higher rent may be worthwhile. If you plan to stay long-term, though, you’ll likely end up spending much more in the long run than if you’d purchased your own furniture.

Cost of Damages

When you rent a furnished apartment, you will likely be responsible for any damages to the furniture in the apartment. In addition, you may have to pay fees for repairs or replace items entirely, depending on the terms of your lease. If you choose a pre-furnished rental, make sure you’re clear on what costs you will be responsible for.

Quality of Furniture

When renting a furnished apartment, you won’t have any control over the quality of the furniture. If you won’t be renting long, the quality may or may not matter much.

Depending on your housing needs, a pre-furnished apartment could help ease many common frustrations that come along with moving. However, be sure to consider each of the pros and cons listed here before making your final choice.
