Garden design sketch course | The Landscaper Magazine

The Yorkshire School of Garden Design is launching an expertly-led aspirational course to equip budding garden designers with the skills to express their vision through the medium of drawing.

From 11th to 13th April, the Freehand Sketching for Designers course will explore and demystify the principles of perspective, teaching students how to capture the character and texture of planting on the page, whilst trying out a range of media for applying impactful colour and learning about how to use computer software to add those all-important finishing touches.

Taking place at the Yorkshire School of Garden Design’s studio at the iconic Grade I listed Harewood House over three consecutive days, the course will combine a series of easy-to-follow steps and shortcuts with exercises to build students’ confidence, ideal for those looking to turn over a new leaf and explore a new craft.

“One of the most valuable skills any designer can develop is the ability to express their ideas through drawing,” says Yorkshire School of Garden Design founder Alistair Baldwin. “This course is a personal favourite and is the perfect opportunity for those looking to observe the world around them with new eyes, translating their vision into clearly communicated drawings.

“The hand sketches produced will speak a thousand words, exploring the students’ ideas on paper in a range of lively and expressive illustrations.”

The course will also act as a stepping-stone for those wishing to further their design education with the Yorkshire School of Design’s popular Diploma in Garden Design or the new Diploma in Planting Design.

The Freehand Sketching for Designers course is one of five expertly curated short courses on offer from the Yorkshire School of Garden Design this year. The courses accommodate all levels of experience and will be taught by a carefully assembled team of professional designers, horticulturalists, architects, landscapers and artists who are all specialists in their own fields and who have built their reputations worldwide.

The three day course is taking place from 11th to 13th April, from 10am to 4pm each day. The course fee is £475 + VAT and includes stationery. No prior experience is necessary.
