10 Home Design Trends from 2023 That Are Here to Stay

With 2023 coming to an end in just a few weeks, you might be curious to see which home design trends from the past 12 months will carry over into the new year. While 2024 is bound to be full of plenty of new design developments, the pros agree that a few trends will potentially have staying power for many months — and even maybe years — to come. Below, find 10 home looks that will continue to make waves in interiors and that experts couldn’t be more thrilled to keep incorporating into their own projects.

1. More Earth Tones

Warm earth tones will continue to appear in homes throughout 2024 — and specifically, muted pinks and mauves with brownish undertones will be having a major moment, according to designer Kristin Harrison, founder of Bungalow 10 Interiors. “They can really create a softness in a room without using the usual warm white,” Harrison says of this color family.

2. Vibrant Kitchens

Sure, the classic white kitchen will always be in style, but many people are choosing to go bold in their cooking spaces, and you’ll certainly see more colorful counters in 2024, notes Seth Ballard, principal of Ballard+Mensua Architecture. “Of the dozen kitchens we have on our boards right now, half are still white, but half are strong colors, showing that this trend is here to stay,” he shares.

Designer Jodi Morton, the founder of 2 to 5 Design, believes that warm colors will shine in the kitchen and beyond. “Deep blue, eggplant, and green are warm, comforting colors that can also feel playful,” she adds. You can see one of Morton’s navy kitchen designs just above.

3. Backyard Getaways

Although many restaurants have eliminated the expansive outdoor dining offerings that popped up in 2020, homeowners aren’t as eager to part ways with their pandemic-friendly entertaining setups. “Many now feel that COVID or something like it could return, and no one wants to be left facing what they had to face during the pandemic,” Ballard says.

So the concept of the outdoor oasis just beyond your back door is here to stay. “People want to create their own vacation in their backyards,” Ballard says, citing client requests for cold plunge pools, saunas, retractable awnings, and screened porches as further evidence of this design phenomenon.

4. Stone Throughout the Home

Stones such as marble, quartzite, onyx, and sandstone are making waves beyond the kitchen and will continue to do so, says designer Tina Ramchandani, the founder of Tina Ramchandani Creative. In particular, the designer has witnessed “dynamic stones” used on fireplace surrounds, windowsills, architectural details, and more (think: installations with large, dramatic veining and gorgeous natural colors that aren’t always super-safe whites and tans). “The reason for this is the beauty and imperfections in the stones, and the fact that each slab is unique, which personalizes the home to the homeowner,” says Ramchandani.

5. Curved Furniture

Go ahead and purchase that funky loveseat with a rounded back, curved headboard, or accent chair with gently rolling arms. Curved furniture, which has made a comeback in recent years, is here to stay in 2024, according to designer Christine Vroom, the founder of Christine Vroom Interiors.

6. New Neutrals

Vroom says you’ll also see an increased use of neutrals in 2024, but she notes that by neutrals, she isn’t referring to just basic whites, tans, and creams. “It’s more of a relaxed palette, featuring mellow colors like light rust, olive, warm coral, and rich browns,” the designer explains. Once again, don’t shy away from those earth tones when making purchases for your home. These hues have staying power in spades.

7. Open Shelving Instead of Upper Cabinets

You’ll continue seeing homeowners opt for open shelving in the kitchen in place of standard upper cabinets, says Ashley Maddox, a kitchen and bath designer at District Cabinets. “While it might not be the right fit for everyone, a combination of wall cabinets and open shelves can create more lightness and balance in the kitchen,” she explains. “It’s also a great opportunity to incorporate your personality with art, glassware, and decor.”

8. Bouclé Fabric and Upholstery

Say it with me: Bouclé isn’t going away! If you’ve fallen in love with the soft, nubby material over the past several years, the good news is that this textile is still relevant for 2024, according to Sydney Levy, a designer with Anthony Wilder Design/Build. You can also consider other heavily textured fabrics, too, like chunky open weaves and faux mohairs.

9. Rechargeable LED Lamps

Those little lamps you’ve seen at your favorite restaurants are going to continue to shine (literally!) all throughout the home next year. “They’re portable and great for a book shelf or coffee table and can be used both inside and outside,” Levy comments.

10. White Oak Cabinetry and Accents

A new fan-favorite species and finish is emerging for wood cabinetry: white oak. “In 2023, we saw wood cabinets come back with a new twist: a lighter, warmer wood,” says designer Tracy Morris, the founder of Tracy Morris Design. She adds, “This white oak trend is here to stay, and can be mixed with many different paint colors and metals.”
